Description

2009 release. An impressive performance by Cecil Taylor at New York's Town Hall in 1971, performing an uninterrupted medley combining parts of four of his tunes. As a bonus, we have included two short quartet pieces taken from a rare broadcast, also appearing here on CD for the first time ever. Free Factory.

If you are considering buying this disc then you are almost certainly a hardcore Cecil Taylor fan, as I am. I purchased this disc at full price prior to the MP3 version's samples being available, and felt like I was seriously ripped off upon hearing it for the first time once it arrived. The 51 minute live set sounds like it was recorded from backstage and is a total insult to Taylor's talent as well as anyone who is willing to shell out $21.00 plus tax and shipping costs. If you are able to get past the shoddy recording quality you may be able to appreciate Taylor's typically intense performance, but I'm sorry: $21.00 is a lot to ask for such a poorly recorded performance. I'm old enough to remember when decent bootlegs of concerts went for a hell of a lot less, and I wouldn't rate this as decent even by bootleg standards. The two bonus tracks are of better sound quality than the live performance at Town Hall, but hardly justify the high price of this CD. Do yourself a favor and listen to the samples first before purchasing, or buy this at your own risk.
